HRCI & SHRM - What’s the difference?

  • How Certification Differs from a Certificate Program

    Compared with certificate programs, certification has three main advantages:

    • Requires specific work experience, competency and education

    • Requires recertification, which makes sure that you stay current in the HR profession through continuing education

    • Allows you to put the letters after your name

    In other words, certification typically consists of the three "E"s: education, experience and examination.

    All HRCI certifications are developed and administered following industry recognized standards, and all programs except aPHRi are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

    HRCI has a strong reputation among HR professionals for their 40 years of expertise in HR certification. They offer eight different HR certifications, including international, global, and state-specific specialties. The three primary HRCI certifications are:

    • (aPHR)

    • (PHR)

    • (SPHR)

    Recertification

    If you earn an HR certification through HRCI, you are required to recertify every three years by demonstrating professional development and achievement.

  • Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) prides itself on providing competency-based exams, meaning their tests focus on the implementation and application of knowledge on the job. They also offer a membership program with local SHRM chapters, allowing for in-person professional development and networking.

    The SHRM model focuses on eight behavioral competencies, grouped into three clusters: leadership, interpersonal, and business. There are two SHRM certifications:

    • (SHRM-CP)

    • (SHRM-SCP)

    Recertification

    If you earn an HR certification through SHRM, you are required to re-certify every three years by earning 60 professional development credits or retaking the exam. Aspire HR makes recertification seamless with approved recertification accredited online courses.
